Why are there no functioning men's monasteries in Mallorca today?

As of today, there are no functioning men’s monasteries in Mallorca primarily due to historical, social, and economic changes. The island, known for its rich monastic heritage, once housed several monasteries, including the famous Monastery of Lluc, which remains more of a pilgrimage site rather than a fully functioning monastic community. Over the years, the decline in vocations, changes in religious practices, and a shift towards secularization have contributed to the diminishing presence of male monastic life.

Additionally, during the 19th and 20th centuries, substantial anti-clerical movements in Spain led to the suppression and closure of many religious institutions, further eroding the monastic community. The remaining monasteries, often functioning more as tourist attractions or cultural sites, are not home to active monastic communities as they once were. Today, the focus has shifted to preserving the cultural heritage and spiritual legacy left by these institutions rather than continuing their traditional monastic practices.
