What first aid measures should I take if I get stung by a jellyfish?

If you find yourself stung by a jellyfish while enjoying your time by the beach, it's important to remain calm and take immediate action to alleviate the pain and prevent further complications. First, carefully remove yourself from the water to avoid additional stings and to avoid panicking. Once on land, assess the sting area. Do not rinse the affected area with fresh water, as this can trigger the venomous nematocysts to release more toxins. Instead, if possible, rinse the area with seawater to help neutralize the venom.

Next, gently remove any tentacles that may be stuck to your skin using tweezers or the edge of a credit card, being careful not to use your hands, as this could lead to further stings. After you’ve removed the tentacles, soaking the sting site in hot water, ideally between 104°F and 113°F (40°C to 45°C), can significantly reduce pain, as heat helps break down the toxins. If you don't have access to hot water, a hot pack or cloth can work as an alternative.

While you’re treating the sting, keep an eye on your symptoms. Mild reactions may include redness and swelling, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. However, if you experience more severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or an allergic reaction, seek medical help immediately. It’s always best to err on the side of caution, so if you're unsure about the severity of the sting, don't hesitate to contact a local healthcare provider. Enjoy your trip, and remember to take care when swimming in areas known for jellyfish!
