What kind of wildlife and plants can I see while hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana?

Many visitors expect the Serra de Tramuntana to be simply rugged and rocky, but its natural beauty goes much deeper. Walking along trails near towns like Valldemossa or Deia, you’ll often notice the calls of the Balearic warbler, an island bird unique to this western Mediterranean region. Birds of prey, such as booted eagles, glide above the limestone peaks, adding a touch of wild majesty to the sky.

The landscape here is a mosaic of native plants adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Aromatic thyme and rosemary grow abundantly, filling the air with their heady scents, while wild olive trees and ancient carob groves offer shade and character to the trails. In spring, the hillsides burst with color, as pink rock roses and purple orchids bloom among the dry stone walls. Lower down, near the Ma-10 road or closer to the coast at Soller, you may spot the vibrant red flowers of the strawberry tree or the delicate clusters of mastic trees.

If you venture into shaded gorges, such as those near the Torrent de Pareis, the environment feels cooler and more humid, allowing ferns and mosses to carpet the stones. Small reptiles like the native Podarcis lizard can be spotted darting across sunlit rocks. While wild goats sometimes make an elusive appearance among the cliffs, you may also encounter shy rabbits and the occasional badger.
