Are sneakers suitable for hiking the trails around the Serra de Tramuntana?

Many of the well-trodden paths around the Serra de Tramuntana have gentle gradients and well-maintained surfaces where sneakers can be a comfortable choice. Trails like the route from Soller to Fornalutx or along parts of the Ma-10 road offer moderate terrain suitable for lightweight shoes, especially in the warmer months when breathability helps. On these paths, a good pair of sneakers provides sufficient cushioning and comfort for a pleasant day out without the bulk of heavier boots.

However, some trails lead over rugged limestone ridges or steeper sections with loose scree, such as the ascent to Puig de Massanella or certain stretches near Valldemossa. On these, sneakers may lack the grip and ankle support that dedicated hiking shoes or boots offer, increasing the risk of slips on loose gravel or uneven rocks. Additionally, after rainfall, trails can become slippery, particularly in shaded forested areas around Deia, where sturdy soles and good traction become more important.

For casual walkers sticking to easy paths or coastal strolls near Cala Mondrago or the sandy shores of Es Trenc, sneakers are generally quite adequate. But if you plan to explore more challenging terrain in the Tramuntana or venture onto rocky upland tracks, investing in trail shoes with reinforced soles and ankle stability is advisable. Assessing the trail difficulty and recent weather will help you decide whether sneakers will cut it or if more robust footwear is called for.
